The Technical Subjects an offered in the secondary cycle of the general Education in Sri Lanka. Following subjects are offered from the Department of Technical Education.

Main tasks and Functions of the Department
- Designing following curriculum materials in every subject.
- Preparation of relevant syllabus.
- Preparation of Teachers Instructional Manual.
- Preparation of Resource books for students.
- Conduct awareness programme for Education officers in the system.
- Develop capacity of subject Directors; ISAA and mentors to facilitate learning and teaching.
- Monitoring the implementation of new Curriculum at School level.
- Popular the subject and new approaches for learning & teaching
Practical and Technical Skill Project
Commencing at Grade in the form of Practical and Technical Skills (PTS), which is compulsory up to Grade 9. The PTS is newly designed subject as suggested in the recent General Education Reforms and is considered to be one of the innovative changes in our school system.
The main Feature of to PTS in the Provide Students of Grades 6 to 9 with an Opportunity to engage in technological and Practical activities that Promote creativity in an area of interest to the students.
Practical and Technical Sills (PTS) brings together activities in the following technical areas.
- Agriculture
- Food
- Elementary Technology
- Graphics
- Business Activities
In addition, this subject provide students, opportunities to gain basic skills in ICT relevant to the above five technical areas.
The PTS Project is entrusted with the conceptualization and designing and developing of the Practical and Technical Skills curriculum at secondary level. The key activities covered under this programme are identification of methodologies and resource, Preparation of action plans, design and developing curriculum and assessment materials, training of trainers, designing in-service train programme and monitoring pilot programme. In adifition to the above the project in presently involved in collaboration with the Education publication Development in the design & develop text books for the all the grades of 6 to 9.
Agriculture & Food Science
Objectives of the course
- To provide a scientific and technical meaning in a sound way to traditional agriculture.
- Use environmental resources in a sustainable way.
- Develop scientific and practical skills connected with animal husbandry.
- Adopt suitable technology in the preservation of agriculture and animal product in order to minimize the losses of harvest that may occur otherwise.
- Develop socio-economics development in the country by attracting the youth to national agriculture development.
Fisheries and food Technology
Objectives
- Understand the extent and the diversity of the aquatic resources of Sri Lanka.
- Assure the Sustainability of the aquatic resources and the aquatic eco-systems.
- Reduce the wastage of fishery resources using suitable preservation and handling methods.
- Upgrade the nutritional and Social Status of the people.
- Contribute the national economical development through fishery.
- Contribute to the Community development of Fishermen.
Design & Technology
Objectives
- To provide opportunities to identify and analyze a problem or situation in order to give solutions.
- Ability to generate the alternative solutions for the identified problem
- Ability to use appropriate technologies for Design.
- Ability to use appropriate tools & equipment safely and correctly for product development.
- Ability to use range of materials economically for product fabrication.
- Ability to manage the resources in the design process.
- Ability to evaluate the product.
- Ability to commutate clearly to introduce a novel idea by means of graphically verbally and as written report.
- To develop, creativity, Problem-solving skills higher order thinking skills, Decision making skills, Entrepreneurship skills and communication skills.
Arts & Craft
Objectives
- Identification of the historical expansion of Arts & Crafts.
- Contributes to balanced Personality development.
- Development of following areas in Arts & Craft.
- Use mechanical drawing for creations.
- Creations using weaving methods.
- Textile-based creations using Sewing methods.
- To win the world of work through entrepreneurship of Arts & Craft.
Home Economics
Objectives
- To build up self confidence and sell esteem in students by applying techniques in problem solving relevance to different areas of Home Management.
- To create as interest in accepting the responsibility of maintaining the nutritional well being by developing required knowledge stalls and attitudes.
- To make aware the vocational opportunities linked with subject Home Economics.
- To develop personal and social development by inculcating favorable attitudes and morality.
Hard Technology
Objectives
- Develop and understanding of general nature and Principles of Technologies.
- Develop Skills Pertaing to Identification of needs, opportunities and activities in Technology.
- Problem identification & Evaluation.
- Finding Solution through adaptation, innovation and design.
- Practical Applications.
- Develop Personal Qualities snals as resource falness, imagination, determination, intuition, sensitivity and entrepreneurship needled for technological activities. This is the first occasion in which a Technology Curriculum in being introduction into GCE (A/L) class.
Agriculture Science
Objectives
- Encourage to use the regionally and Plentifully available resources for agriculture in Productive and efficient manner.
- Provide Opportunities to identify the paths of entrepreneurship in Agriculture.
- Open Opportunities for new invention in the agriculture sector.
